Dune marked a change not in what I read but in why I read.
The main reason I read Dune was still the same: Escape but, in the escape, I found a new thing. I found the Litany Against Fear.
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
The Litany was like a breath of fresh air. I didn’t know if it was a real thing, I hoped it was. Even if it was real, I had no idea how to make it work, but it helped me believe that somehow, someway, I could be free.
